Herbaria: the archive beside the garden
Behind most serious gardens sits a herbarium — pressed, dried, catalogued specimens, some centuries old. They are how species are described, distributions are mapped and change over time is proved. It is the least visited and most consequential room on the site.
Ex situ conservation
The formal name for protecting a species outside its natural habitat. It is not a substitute for protecting wild places — that is in situ conservation, and it is always better — but it is the safety net for species whose habitat has already gone.

Conservation, research, education and public benefit. A site delivering only the last of these is a public garden, which is a fine thing to be. A botanical garden is doing all four, mostly out of sight.

It is easy to think of plants as scenery — the green backdrop against which the interesting things happen. The reverse is closer to the truth. Remove plants and the list of what remains is short.
No forests
No forests means no forest ecosystems, no habitat for the great majority of terrestrial species, no soil stability on slopes, no water cycling at scale. Nearly every landscape people describe as wild is, at its foundation, a plant community with animals living in it.
No food systems
Every calorie humanity eats traces back to a plant, directly or through an animal that ate one. Global agriculture rests on a startlingly narrow set of crops — and the wild relatives of those crops, held in gardens and seed banks, are where resistance to the next disease or drought will have to come from.
No medicines
A substantial share of modern pharmaceuticals derive from or were inspired by plant compounds. Most plant species have never been chemically screened at all. Every species lost is a library burned before anyone read it.
No clean air
Photosynthesis produced the oxygen atmosphere that made animal life possible and continues to maintain it. Plants also absorb carbon, filter particulates and cool cities by many degrees. This is infrastructure that nobody built and nobody bills for.
No pollinators
Plants and pollinators are a single system in two parts. Lose the flowering plants and the pollinators follow; lose the pollinators and a large fraction of the food supply follows them. Neither survives the other's absence for long.
No ecosystems
Plants are the primary producers — the base of nearly every food web on land. Everything above them in the structure is, in a literal sense, standing on them.
The quiet arithmetic
A significant proportion of the world's known plant species are currently assessed as threatened with extinction. Many have never been assessed at all, and some have been described only once, decades ago, from a site that no longer exists. A botanical garden is not one collection but many, each assembled for a reason. Walking past them without knowing those reasons is like walking through a library and admiring the bindings.
The pharmacy we have barely opened
Living records of the species behind existing medicines, and of the countless others never screened. These collections also preserve the traditional knowledge attached to them — knowledge that, like the plants themselves, disappears when the community that held it is displaced.
What actually belongs here
Native collections teach a region its own flora — the plants that evolved alongside the local pollinators, soils and climate. They are the reference source for habitat restoration and for gardeners who want to plant something that supports life rather than merely occupying space.
Found nowhere else on Earth
Islands, isolated mountains and ancient lakes concentrate species that exist in one place and no other. Endemics are extraordinarily vulnerable: destroy the single site and the species is gone globally, not locally.
The most diverse, the most threatened
Glasshouses recreating tropical conditions are among the most expensive things a garden runs. They exist because tropical plant diversity is immense, poorly documented, and disappearing faster than it is being described.

Sometimes the last population there is
A number of plant species now survive only in cultivation — extinct in the wild, alive in a glasshouse. The aim is always eventual reintroduction, and it has succeeded before. It requires the habitat to still be there when the plant is ready to go home.
The future, dried and frozen
Seed banking stores dried seed at low temperature, where many species remain viable for decades or longer. It is compact, comparatively cheap and enormously powerful — though some species produce seed that cannot be dried or frozen at all, and those must be held as living plants or in tissue culture.
Why gardens and seed banks are not the same insurance
A seed bank preserves genetic material efficiently but statically. A living collection preserves a plant that can be studied, propagated, observed through its whole life cycle, and shown to a nine-year-old who has never thought about plants before. Serious institutions run both, because each covers what the other cannot — and because neither is any substitute for protecting the habitat the plant came from. That work is happening in protected areas and eco parks, and the two efforts are two halves of one strategy.
From exploration to conservation
An Inheritance That Must Be Acknowledged Honestly
Many of the world's oldest and most significant botanical gardens grew out of the age of European imperial expansion. Their collections were assembled during centuries of exploration, and it would be dishonest to describe that history as a neutral scientific enterprise.
What the history actually was
Plants were gathered across the colonised world and moved between continents in service of empire and commerce. Economically valuable species — rubber, quinine, tea, coffee, spices — were transplanted into new plantation systems, transforming economies and, frequently, entrenching exploitation. Knowledge held by indigenous and local communities was recorded, used and rarely credited.
Some of the specimens that founded the world's great herbaria arrived through processes no modern institution would defend. That is simply the record, and a garden that skips over it is doing history the same disservice it would never permit in its taxonomy.
What those institutions became
The same institutions are now among the most important conservation bodies in existence. The collections built in one era have become the reference material of another — used to describe species, to map how ranges have shifted, to identify what has been lost, and to guide restoration.
Modern practice has changed materially. International agreements now govern how plant material is collected and how benefits are shared with countries of origin. Partnerships increasingly place expertise and material with institutions in the regions the plants came from. Repatriation of specimens and of digitised records is underway in many places. It is uneven and incomplete — and it is real.
Holding both truths at once
It is possible to acknowledge that an institution's origins were entangled with empire and to recognise that its present work is indispensable to the survival of species. Both are true. The mature response is not to look away from the first or to discount the second, but to expect these institutions to be honest about their history — and to keep doing the work only they can do.

What Is Going On Behind The Hedge
The visitor sees paths, benches and flowering borders. Behind them, and usually in buildings closed to the public, a set of scientific disciplines is at work — most of them unglamorous, all of them consequential.
Botany
The study of plants themselves — how they grow, reproduce, defend themselves and interact with everything around them. It sounds foundational because it is. Almost nothing else here works without it.
Taxonomy
Describing, naming and classifying species. This is the unfashionable work on which everything else depends: you cannot protect, count or study a species that has never been properly distinguished from its neighbours. New plant species are still being described every year — and some are described only once, from a place that has since been cleared.
Ecology
How plants relate to soils, climate, pollinators, fungi and one another. Ecology is what turns a list of species into an understanding of a system — and it is why conserving a plant without its relationships preserves less than it appears to.
Horticulture
The practical craft of keeping difficult plants alive, and it is far harder than it looks. Some species will germinate only after fire, or a specific fungus, or a cold winter they no longer receive. Horticulturists are the people who work out what a species needs when nobody has ever grown it before.
Plant genetics
Genetic diversity within a species is what allows it to adapt. A conservation collection built from too few individuals may look healthy and be a genetic dead end. Genetics is how curators tell the difference.
Seed banking
Collecting, drying, testing, freezing and — crucially — periodically germinating a sample to confirm the seed is still alive. A seed bank that is never tested is a filing cabinet, not an insurance policy.
Climate research
Centuries of records on when plants leaf, flower and fruit constitute one of the longest and most precise biological datasets available. Those records are now among the clearest evidence that the growing season itself is shifting.
Restoration ecology
Putting plants back. Gardens supply the seed, the propagation expertise and the science behind habitat restoration projects — and they are frank about the fact that restoration is slower, costlier and less complete than simply not destroying the habitat in the first place.
Citizen science
Flowering dates, pollinator counts, photographic records — data gathered by ordinary visitors that feeds genuine research. It is one of the few ways to leave a garden having added something rather than merely having taken nothing.

There is a practical case for botanical gardens that has nothing to do with science, and it is not a soft one. After a fortnight of airports, crowds and concrete, an hour among plants does something measurable to a traveller — and it usually costs less than a coffee.

Curators

Horticulturists
The ones who work out how to keep alive a species nobody has ever cultivated, whose germination requirements are unknown and whose wild population is down to a few dozen individuals. It is patient, skilled, unglamorous work, and species survive because of it.
Seed bank specialists
Collecting, drying, testing, freezing, re-testing. They are curating something for people not yet born, in the hope it will never be needed and the knowledge that it might be.
Conservationists
Working across the boundary between the garden and the wild — reintroducing species, advising on protected areas, and arguing, often unsuccessfully, that a habitat is worth more standing than cleared.
Landscape architects
They design a space that must serve a scientific collection, a research programme, a school group and a grieving visitor who came to sit somewhere quiet — all at once, and without any of them noticing the design.
Environmental educators
The people who take a class of restless children and hand back, an hour later, several who will care about plants for the rest of their lives. It is the highest-leverage work in the building and among the least celebrated.
Volunteers
Weeding, guiding, labelling, counting, welcoming. Many gardens simply could not open without them, and most of them ask for nothing beyond being allowed to keep doing it.
And the ones who came before
Every mature tree in a botanical garden was planted by someone who knew they would not see it finished. That is, quietly, the entire ethic of the place — and arguably the most useful thing a visitor can take home.

Ten Kinds Of Garden, Ten Different Purposes
The phrase "botanical garden" covers institutions with strikingly different mandates, funding and scientific weight. Knowing which sort you are walking into changes what you look for. This is an educational overview, not a ranking and not a list of destinations.
Royal and national gardens
Often centuries old, state-supported, with large herbaria, seed banks and international research programmes. These institutions frequently carry global conservation responsibilities — and the complicated histories discussed above.
University gardens
Teaching and research collections attached to a department of botany or ecology. Among the oldest botanical gardens in existence are university gardens, some established for the study of medicinal plants long before the word "botany" settled into its modern meaning.
Community gardens
Smaller, locally governed, often volunteer-run. Their scientific output may be modest and their educational reach enormous — and for many people they are the only botanical garden they will ever actually enter.
Tropical gardens
Sited in the tropics or maintained under glass elsewhere. They hold plant diversity that is immense, poorly documented and disappearing quickly — which makes them among the most urgent collections in the world.
Desert gardens
Specialists in arid-adapted flora. As water becomes the defining agricultural constraint of the century, these collections have moved from horticultural curiosity to strategic resource.
Medicinal gardens
The oldest tradition of all. They preserve both the plants and the ethnobotanical knowledge attached to them — knowledge that belongs to communities and, increasingly, is being credited and shared on those terms.
Conservation gardens
Focused explicitly on threatened species: propagation, seed banking and reintroduction to the wild. Some hold the last surviving individuals of species that no longer exist outside cultivation.
Research gardens
Working collections, sometimes with limited public access, built to answer specific scientific questions. The public-facing element is small precisely because the science is the point.
Arboretums
Collections of trees and woody plants, often laid out across substantial landscapes. They operate on a timescale nothing else does: an arboretum planted today produces its most valuable data in a hundred years.
Urban botanical gardens
Embedded in cities, they do a double job — conservation and daily contact with nature for millions of people who would otherwise have almost none. In an urbanising world, this may prove to be the most influential category of all.
How to read any garden you enter
Ask three questions. Are the plants labelled with documented provenance, or merely named? Does the garden publish what it is conserving and why? And does it explain the origins of its collection honestly? A modest community garden that answers yes is doing more genuine botanical work than a spectacular one that answers no. How To Be A Good Visitor
Nothing here is difficult. It amounts to understanding that you are walking through a scientific collection that happens to be beautiful, rather than a beautiful place that happens to have labels.
Respecting the collection
- Stay on the paths. Soil compaction damages root systems invisibly and permanently, and some of these plants are irreplaceable in the strictest sense of the word.
- Take nothing. No cuttings, no seeds, no fruit, no "just one" flower. Some of what you are looking at is a conservation accession, and some plant collecting is a criminal offence. Assume it always is.
- Touch nothing without permission. Some specimens are fragile, some are toxic, and some are the only individuals of their kind in the country.
- Read the labels. They are the whole point. The provenance line — where this plant came from, and when — is frequently the most interesting sentence in the garden.
- Biosecurity matters. Clean footwear, and never bring plant material in. Gardens are acutely vulnerable to imported pests and pathogens, and an entire collection can be lost to one.

- Take the guided tour. The person leading it usually knows the collection intimately and will show you things you would walk past a hundred times. It is almost always the best value on offer.
- Check accessibility in advance. Many gardens are among the most accessible outdoor spaces in a city — step-free routes, seating, accessible glasshouses — but glasshouses and heritage paths vary. Contact the garden and confirm rather than assume.
- Photography. Generally welcome. Check rules on tripods, drones and commercial use, and never step off a path for a better angle.
- Bring children, and slow down. One glasshouse looked at properly beats the whole site walked past. Hand them a magnifier and follow.
- Support the conservation. Pay the entry fee gladly, become a member if you can, buy from the shop, and volunteer if you live nearby. Much of this work is chronically underfunded, and visitors are a meaningful part of what keeps it going.
